Downloading and installing the desktop agent

In order to download the setup file:

  • Click on the PowerBI Robots Agent icon at the top of the Playlist tab or use the :

  • Save the setup (or execute it directly) and wait until download is complete

After the download is complete, right click the file and extract its content.

  • Click the PowerBI Robots setup file to run the program and follow the instructions in the installer as shown below:

After the installation process is completed, you’ll find a shortcut icon named “PowerBI Robots” at your desktop.

When the installation process is over, open PowerBI Robots Config, and follow these steps:

General tab:

  • Insert your PowerBI Robots subscription ID, as shown in the upper right corner of the PowerBI Robots web agent, and click Synchronize; (tip: by clicking your ID, you’ll be directed to an area where you can copy it to your clipboard)

Power BI tab:

To configure PowerBI access in PowerBI Robots Agent you have two options:

  • PowerBI Account - It comes as a default option and requires less configuration. You only need to log in with your PowerBI account.

  • Service Principal Credential - It is mandatory only if you want to use Row Level Security or manage your Power BI Embedded.

Power BI Account:

You must login with your PowerBI Account, otherwise it won't work. See example below:

Service Principal Credential:

For this option to work, you must fill in:

  • Tenant Authority: Your Azure Tenant Id

  • Client Id: The application client Id you created in your Azure

  • Client Secret: The application client secret you created in your Azure

After that initial setup, you must allow access to this Azure App to your workspaces in PowerBI Service.

Providers:

There are several Providers available, please select the desired one to configure your SMTP.

You can use the dedicated Login button, if available on your Email Provider.

Otherwise, please fill in the SMTP Username and password.

Service account:

The Windows user configured on the Service tab needs to have Read and Write permission to the PowerBI Robots installation folder. This service needs to be running all the time, or at least when the playlists are scheduled to execute.

Your PowerBI Robots agent’s configuration is complete! Your playlists can now be sent.

Uninstalling PowerBI Robots:

To uninstall PowerBI Robots:

  • Stop your service in the License tab in the PowerBI Robots desktop agent

  • Close the PowerBI Robots desktop agent

  • Click the Windows start button, click the settings wheel and click Apps

  • Search the list for PowerBI Robots, click it and select uninstall:

  • Follow the instructions in the uninstallation wizard

After setting up your playlists, you must install and configure the PowerBI Robots desktop agent and start the service. If you don’t do it, PowerBI Robots simply won’t work. This agent sets things up and synchronizes your playlists. It does not collect any information – everything is stored locally, on the user’s infrastructure. You can download the PowerBI Robots desktop agent on the web or by .

To use Row Level Security, or to manage your PowerBI Embedded, you must use "Service Principal Credential". Also, you will find more information .
